Independent Living is a place that offers apartment or cottages that will
give the resident the feeling of living alone but will offer the ability to
socialize with other residents. They usually offer one to three meals,
light housekeeping, transportation out into the community, and some entertainment.
The resident needs to have the ability to make decisions and to take care of
their own ADLs (activities of daily living), such as bathing, dressing, and
feeding. If the resident is feeling ill, the facility will usually bring
the food to their room for no extra charge, however this is a limited service.
The resident needs to have the level of cognition to be able to find safety
and their way out of the building in case of an emergency.
There isn't a nurse on staff so the resident will need to be able to dispense
their own medications. Some home health agencies will come into the
independent living facilities for home therapy or care if needed but these
services are usually limited.
These facilities are not certified by the state since they are for
Independent residents.
