Physical Therapy:
Physical Therapy (PT) is part of the rehabilitation team. It is
performed by a professional that has a degree in PT and has a state license in
the state that they work.
The goal of PT is to look at what the resident's prior level of function was
prior to going into the hospital or in the past 6 months to a year. The PT
will evaluate the resident and will write goals to be obtained in a certain time
frame. The PT will work with the resident to teach them to be able to
ambulate again if possible and to increase their balance and strength.
The PT works on items such as:
Sitting and standing balance to increase their safety and also to increase
their strength and ability to ambulate.
Exercises to build stamina and overall strength.
Ambulation by utilizing assistive devices if needed such as different kinds
of canes and walkers. They will use their judgment as to which device
offers the maximum safety and stability.
Maximizing ambulation for a functional distance so the resident can return to
a functional lifestyle.
Car transfers so the resident can get in and out of a car safely.
Family training so the resident can return home in the safest environment.
There are many other functions of the PT but this was just to give you a
basic understanding.
