Assisted living in North Carolina is defined as a special combination of
housing, supportive services, personalized assistance and health care designed
to respond to the individual needs of those who need help with activities of
daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. Supportive
services are available 24 hours per day, to meet scheduled and unscheduled needs
in a way that promotes maximum dignity and independence for each resident.
Assisted living communities are for the resident that is rather independent
but may need additional help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as
bathing, dressing, or eating. If help is needed, staff will be available
to assist the resident.
The resident is usually cognitively alert but can have some mild dementia.
There should be personal care aides on staff to assist in helping the residents if
needed.
Some assisted livings will have a secured unit for residents with Alzheimer's
and dementia. This is a wing that requires a combination to exit the unit
so the residents can't wander out of the building. Assistive devices are
allowed. Care is provided for residents that need assistance in ADL's
(activities of daily living) which include dressing, bathing, and eating.
The resident is usually ambulatory or semi-ambulatory.
Assisted living residences can range from a purpose-built, high-rise
apartment complex to a converted Victorian home to a renovated school.
They may be freestanding or housed with other options, such as independent
living or nursing care. The rooms vary in size from one room to a full
apartment.
There are two different types of assisted livings.
